Getting featured in an Award-winning episodic documentary!

Spring of 2021, I got an email I thought for sure was SPAM. I pushed off responding to it because it felt like it could be real, but was worried it was truly just a phishing email that didn’t warrant my time or energy. So it sat in my inbox collecting dust until another email came in a month later, “following up on my previous email”, it said. Whoops! So I quickly responded to the now well-known documentary film director and confirmed that yes, I would love to be a part of his upcoming project and was absolutely interested in more details.

Sometimes the universe has to push you rather hard to get you to step onto the path you’re supposed to be on.

Later that Fall, I was on the phone getting instructions for the upcoming video shoot in Lincoln, Nebraska. They were flying in a whole directory crew, hiring a film team, and the host of the show, Grammy-nominated artist, award-winning speaker, and best-selling author, THE Justin Michael Williams (one of my now besties, btw) was coming to Nebraska to meet ME and film this documentary.

I was busy having a larger-than-life and out-of-body experience.

I met Justin and showed him around Lincoln, Nebraska the first day. The second day consisted of studio work where we got very deep into another one of Justin’s specialties, shadow work, and we worked together to process some very hard life truths through tarot and fill-in-the-blank responses. Then, from that emotional, and soul work, they zoomed in on the Brothers Koren (previously a part of The Kin) to assist me in writing a song about the experience. As a former choir kid, the pressure was on. But after a few hours I had written the lyrics to my first song ever and subsequently caught the songwriting bug as well.

The documentary, Inside Change, went on to air on SoundsTrue’s home streaming platform, and was nominated for several film festival awards including the Anthem Awards, Black LGBTQ+ Film Festival, Accolade Global Film Competition, Awareness Film Festival, Los Angeles Queer Film Festival, and the Hollywood International Diversity Film Festival.
